Engaging volunteers to offer home modification services for low-income families living in sub-divided flats

Building on the success of the start-up project in 2016 supported by the SIE Fund, DOMAT proposes to scale up the project to improve the living and study environment for children of low-income families in sub-divided flats, primarily in the Sham Shui Po district, through providing them with home modification services and suitable furniture. It aims to improve the learning performance of the children, which will in turn promote their upward mobility in the long run.

DOMAT will partner with the Society for Community Organisation (SoCO) to identify suitable families to participate in this project. Volunteers with design background will be recruited to assist with home visits and proposing modification plans to the participating families. Working with the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, DOMAT will also engage the Association’s sheltered workshops to produce modular furniture which can be used even if the beneficiaries move to public housing flats later on.

Home visits and post-modification evaluations will be conducted to collect the families’ feedback and review the social impact of the project.  Besides, workshops will be held to help the beneficiaries learn about organising and tidying tips as well as basic home maintenance knowledge.
